Summer Worship Schedule to Begin

Old Union will begin our summer worship schedule on Sunday, May 25th.  Worship services will be held at 10 AM and Sunday School classes are suspended from May 25th through August 31st.  Weather permitting, we will worship outside in the pavilion.

Sharing of Joys & Concerns

For many, the sharing of joys and concerns in our worship service is the most significant part of our service.  This is a time to lift up prayer requests.  If you have a message for the congregation that is not a prayer request please voice it during the announcement period at the beginning of the service.

The Bible on Mp3

If it's easier for you to listen to the Bible than to read it, here's a resource to help you.  Use the following links to get to websites where you can download audio files to hear the entire Bible, read in the NIV version.  And it's free!

Prayer Offering

Each month during the prayer offering you have an opportunity to make a prayer request.  The prayer basket will be passed through the sanctuary during the offering portion of our service so that requests can be put into the basket.  This basket will be available after worship service at the back of the church so that you may take out a request if you would like to pray for someone during the month.  The prayer request can be anonymous if you would like.

2008: Year of Prayer

Old Union's session has endorsed 2008 as 'The Year of Prayer', the purpose of which is to help the congregation deepen their spiritual life. The Year of Prayer will call us back to an awareness of our purpose as a church to grow in faith, as well as discover new and different ways to use our daily time with God.

Components for the Year in Prayer include: calendar of daily prayer suggestions, monthly spiritual exercises to do individually, Lord's Prayer study series, sermon series of prayers from the Bible, and the opportunity to have a prayer partner.

Honoring Graduates

Old Union would like to honor all graduates on June 1st.  If you know of anyone graduating from high school or college this year, please forward that information to Peter, Barb C. or Karen L.

Building Fund Update

The stock market fluctuations are having an effect on our building fund account.  While things are moving slower than anticipated things are moving forward.  The Building Planning Committee is looking at revised plans and forwarded the approximate cost to the Building Finance Committee who is working on how to pay for the expansion.  Once finalized, the plans will be brought before the congregation.  Please continue to pray for this initiative and the committee.

Presbyterian Church 36th General Assembly

Peter has accepted an invitation to stand as a candidate for vice moderator for the Presbyterian Church USA.  Roger S., an elder from Nebraska, has asked Peter to fill the vice moderator position if Roger is elected in June as moderator of the General Assembly, the highest office in our denomination.  If elected, Peter will continue to be our pastor during his two year term as vice moderator, however the extra duties he will take on may take up to a third of his work time.  The national church will make 'appropriate financial arrangements' to Old Union during this time and the presbytery will make sure that someone is available to lead worship and provide pastoral care when Peter may have to be away.  If you have any questions please speak with Peter.  Please pray that we will all be able to follow where God leads us.

Church Camp

It's time to sign up for summer church camp.  Studies have shown that a camp or conference experience is a powerful way for young people to grow in faith and make a commitment to Christ.  Studies also show that children benefit in many ways from the kinds of outdoor experiences they enjoy at camp. Brochures are available at the back of the church.  Thanks to the generosity of the Sydney Bahney Memorial Foundation, Old Union will pay the full amount for a child to attend their first year of camp and will pay half of the cost for a child attending their second year.  Help is available for those in financial need.

An Afternoon at Camp

If your son or daughter is hesitant about going to camp for a whole week, perhaps they would enjoy an afternoon at camp to see what happens on a typical day at Westminster Highlands.  Peter is planning on a day during the week of June 16th.  Cost is $7.50 per person.  We'll leave after lunch and return that evening.  Please complete the information sheet in the back of the church if you're interested, including the day you would prefer.

Nature Cruise on Lake Arthur

Old Union is planning a cruise on Lake Arthur aboard the 'Nautical Nature', a 45-passenger enclosed pontoon boat.  If you are interested, please sign up at the back of the church for the June 15th cruise.  A picnic dinner is to follow the cruise and there is also a free Ricky Scaggs concert to be held that weekend that you may wish to attend.  Estimated cost to be about $5/person.

Mission Challenge

The Old Union session voted to participate in the Presbyterian Church Mission Challenge project, which hopes to raise funds of $1/day/per member for the year that will used for missionary works.

If you would like to designate your gift for a particular missionary, consider Glenn Hallead, who works in Ghana and supports the ministry of our friends in the EP Church, Ghana.

Contributions can be put in the offering plate, noting it is for the Mission Challange, or can be sent directly to: Presbyterian Church USA, PO Box 643700, Pittsburgh, PA 15264-3700.
